  1. 1896-1987. French artist and writer, a leader
  2. of Surrealism until 1929. His interest in the
  3. unconscious led him to experiment with
  4. `automatic' drawing - simple pen and ink
  5. work, and later multi-textured accretions of
  6. pigment, glue, and sand. Masson left the
  7. Surrealist movement after a quarrel with the
  8. writer Andre Breton. During World War II he
  9. moved to the USA, then returned to France and
  10. painted landscapes.
