1896-1987. French artist and writer, a leader
of Surrealism until 1929. His interest in the
unconscious led him to experiment with
`automatic' drawing - simple pen and ink
work, and later multi-textured accretions of
pigment, glue, and sand. Masson left the
Surrealist movement after a quarrel with the
writer Andre Breton. During World War II he
moved to the USA, then returned to France and
painted landscapes.
